A few years back Google introduced the idea of updating their search engine to favour secure websites using SSL/TLS connections. These types of connections ensure your visitor's data is safe by encrypting any data transmitted from the site, including but not limited to login information, payment details and your own personal data. Back then SSL’s were only really essential for people to use their websites to sell online but things have now changed.
Fast forward to July 2018 — the worldwide web has grown exponentially, with more data being uploaded than ever before. However, with more data comes more risk and more people who have access to the data that you uploaded online.
“In 2018 Google released a statement to say that websites that are not protected with an SSL and using HTTP will begin to be penalised on their search engine. This means that, if you are still using the insecure connection on your website, your Google page ranking will start to drop, as secure websites are being favoured. This will ultimately lead to less traffic on your website, and less business, as less people will be able to find your website.”
Since January 2017, Google has been marking all websites that use input fields for passwords or credit card details as “Not secure”, to inform users that their data is not necessarily safe or private. When visiting your website will be put off due to the ‘Not Secure’ notice appearing in the address. This notice will soon be shown in red and with a red warning sign. See below:

So, why the move to HTTPS over HTTP?
- Prevent your website being penalised on Google searches
- Maintain traffic to your website
- Increase visitor reassurance and peace of mind
- Comply with new GDPR laws and regulations
